Chances are, if you've decided to build a home in the U.S. Virgin Islands, you understand the appeal of indoor-outdoor living — like a treehouse. Robinson Crusoe all grown up. A close relationship with the outdoors is one of the pleasures of island living, but it also asks a good deal more of the architecture — especially during high winds and heavy rain, with salt air and humidity a year-round constant.
We think about hurricane-proof homes in this way. Hurricane resistance isn't a single feature or an upgrade you add at the end. It's the sum of where the house sits, how it's built, how well it keeps water out, and what it's wearing on the outside. When those decisions get made together rather than bolted on one at a time, a home can take serious weather and still maintain that easy, breezy, open-air way of life that drew you to the U.S. Virgin Islands in the first place.
We design all our homes to live in harmony with their natural environment. Which means that before pencil ever hits paper, we study how your site already behaves in conjunction with the elements: where the trade winds arrive and how they accelerate around a ridge, where water collects and where it wants to go, and how the sun tracks across a room season to season. By the time we start drawing, the site has already made most of the big decisions for us. That close reading of a place and space is where resilient coastal design actually begins.

We also have a reputation for our attention to detail. We don’t see a house as an exterior envelope first and an interior, second. We zoom in and out every single day — looking at form and volume from the outside, then shift inward to see how those spaces feel on a tactile level. We consider how a drain affects a facade, or how a window impacts an interior, or how a sink meets a backsplash. These may seem minor, but when done they're wrong, they distract and cheapen. When done well, they elevate the entire space.

We integrate solar, rainwater collection, shading, and natural ventilation; we think about maintenance from day one and design for longevity without sacrificing grace. The lessons we learn in each region make us better designers in both.
