Design-driven humans making space for life

For nearly two decades, Matrix Design Studio has crafted bespoke, modern homes from California to the Caribbean — context-led, client-centered, and built to last. Under design principal Nico Wallace, the firm balances beauty with backbone: architecture that reconciles form and feeling, draws the outside in, and calibrates every detail through carefully listening to our clients and honoring the strategic constraints and possibilities of each project.

HOW WE WORK WE START BY LISTENING. Not just to the wish list, but to the stories. A home isn’t about square footage or bedroom count — it’s about where you drink your morning coffee, where you sit to do creative work, how a teenager might wander back to the heart of family life. Many firms take a project brief and sprint with it, leaving clients feeling like they’re out of the loop; whereas we stay in conversation. Goals evolve – so our design does too.

Inside the studio and with our clients, we work like a roundtable — no pedestals, no passengers. Ideas emerge, design is peer-reviewed, and the vision that aligns with the way our clients want to live prevails. That same spirit extends to the jobsite where our trusted network of contractors and craftspeople are partners at the table. The result is a respectful, collaborative, and enjoyable environment that elevates each project and gets them done. We uncover what matters most and give it form: spaces that invite those moments.

WHAT WE’RE KNOWN FOR COZY COASTAL CALM, BORN OF CONTEXT. We’re known for cozy coastal spaces that bring the outside in, structures that work within and respect the context of their existing environment. We’re also known for custom cabinetry and using unique, sustainable materials you won't find in a big box aislet. Because we like our projects to tell a story — your story.

We also have a reputation for our attention to detail. We don’t see a house as an exterior envelope first and an interior, second. We zoom in and out every single day — looking at form and volume from the outside, then shift inward to see how those spaces feel on a tactile level. We consider how a drain affects a facade, or how a window impacts an interior, or how a sink meets a backsplash. These may seem minor, but when done they're wrong, they distract and cheapen. When done well, they elevate the entire space.

BEAUTY & BACKBONE DESIGNED WITH LONGEVITY IN MIND. Designing in seismic and hurricane-prone regions from California to the Caribbean, has made resilience second nature. We integrate solar, rainwater collection, shading, and natural ventilation; we think about maintenance from day one and design for longevity without sacrificing grace. The lessons we learn in each region make us better designers in both.

ALWAYS ON THE SAME PAGE INTEGRATED DESIGN FROM THE GROUND UP. As both architects and interior designers, our projects flow with ease. The same team that chooses the exterior of your home is also thinking about the upholstery on your future favorite chair and the way the sun hits the tree in your backyard and if your kitchen marble plays nicely with the ceiling beams. This level of integration means fewer handoffs, more cohesion, and homes where the structure and the spaces within it speak the same language.
